Temporary Exhibit on view March through August 2025

Extractivism

Now on view in the Whitney Plantation visitor center through Summer 2025.

This exhibit by documentarian Jazmin Miller and journalist Anya Groner explores the challenges of Black descendant communities surviving and thriving in Louisiana’s Cancer Alley. Jazmin Miller’s family has owned land in Jonestown in St. James Parish for a century. Land that has sustained rich connection to culture and family is now at risk as heavy industry builds more chemical plants, including the proposed Formosa plant, which would be the largest plastics manufacturing facility in the country.

Extrativism tells Miller’s family’s story through photos, video and audio recordings. Visitors to the exhibit may scan QR codes to hear interviews with her family members.
