Join on June 5 from 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. CT for our first in a series of virtual book club meetings.
Whitney Plantation Executive Director Ashley Rogers for a powerful, virtual conversation with author and investigative journalist Lee Hawkins about his groundbreaking memoir, I Am Nobody’s Slave: How Uncovering My Family’s History Set Me Free.
Part personal genealogy, part historical reckoning, Hawkins’s critically acclaimed book traces 400 years of his Black American family’s lineage—from enslavement through Jim Crow to the present day—and offers a searing examination of intergenerational trauma and the enduring legacy of slavery in the United States.
This special event kicks off what we hope will be the first in a new Whitney Plantation Virtual Book Club series. Structured as a moderated conversation with time for audience questions, this event invites reflection, dialogue, and connection around one of the most urgent stories of our time.
📚 Reading the book in advance is encouraged, but not required. Purchase your copy online from the Whitney Gift Store.
We’ll gather virtually for approximately one hour—beginning with a 30–45 minute discussion, followed by an open Q&A. Moderated by Whitney staff, the event will be hosted on Microsoft Teams (free to use – download at https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-teams/download-app) and is accessible to all.
We look forward to hosting you at this much-anticipated event!
