Whitney Plantation will open a new exhibit, Homecoming: A Period Room Installation on March 6, 2027.
This immersive Afro-futurist period-room installation was created by Chloé Duplessis, an artist and historian who happens to be legally blind. Grounded in archival research, material culture, fiber art, sound, and non-visual ways of knowing, the exhibit reimagines the first floor of the Big House at Whitney Plantation as the home of a real enslaved family who served there in the 1830s. The exhibition reclaims domestic space to restore a sense of family, care, creativity, and humanity to people whose lives were reduced to historical records of ownership.
Homecoming serves as the culminating exhibition of Duplessis’s multi-site 12 Tablecloths series. Grounded in archival research, material culture, fiber art, sound, and non-visual ways of knowing, the installation reclaims the historic house for the people whose labor made life within it possible.
