Are you interested in the historical archaeology of southeastern Louisiana? Want to learn more about how to recognize different types of historic artifacts? Have questions about artifacts you may have found on your own property? Archaeology provides a crucial source of information about the everyday lives of people enslaved at plantations and of people who labored there after Emancipation. It also gives clues to the ways that they resisted oppression.
Come join staff and students from the University of New Orleans Archaeology Lab at Whitney Plantation on Saturday, October 19th from 10 AM – 4 PM as we prepare collections excavated from sites in the Whitney area for curation. We’ll also be demonstrating some of the equipment we use in locating sites (like ground-penetrating radar) and in analyzing materials. You’ll be able to see items excavated in years past from the Whitney Quarters Site, the kitchen area, and other locations nearby.
