Wallace, LA – Whitney Plantation is proud to announce that it has been awarded a grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities (LEH). This funding will support Whitney Plantation’s emergency preparedness initiatives and allow the museum to better preserve the site for future generations.

The Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities’ Emergency Readiness Grants help organizations better prepare for and respond to potential threats, reducing vulnerability and putting in place clear and current strategies for mitigating the effects of future emergencies.

“We are honored to receive this grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities,” said Whitney Plantation Executive Director Ashley Rogers. “In a changing climate, historic sites like ours are especially vulnerable to the damaging effects of hurricanes and other natural disasters. This grant will help us prepare by allowing us to train our staff and purchase much-needed emergency supplies.”

Whitney Plantation is located in Wallace, Louisiana. Since opening to the public in 2014, the site has served as a vital educational resource, drawing visitors from around the world to learn about the lived experiences of enslaved people through guided tours, exhibitions, and memorials. In 2021, the museum was in the direct path of Hurricane Ida, which caused an estimated $1 million in damages. Emergency preparedness and response has been a key aspect of the museum’s operations ever since this event. Grants from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities have helped ensure that the museum is better prepared than ever for a natural disaster.

The Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities provides grants to organizations across the state that contribute to the understanding and appreciation of Louisiana’s diverse cultural heritage.
