Wallace, La., March 24, 2025 — Whitney Plantation is proud to announce it has been awarded a $15,000 grant from the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities (LEH) through the 2025 Louisiana Culture Care Fund. This funding, made possible by the State of Louisiana and administered by LEH, will directly support general operating costs at Whitney Plantation, providing an essential means of sustaining the museum’s mission of educating the public about the history and legacies of slavery in the United States.
Founded in 2014, Whitney Plantation is the only plantation museum in Louisiana with an exclusive focus on the lives of enslaved people in America. Located on a site where generations of Black people—both enslaved and free—labored in sugar, rice, and indigo production, the museum interprets more than 250 years of history through historic structures, memorials, and guided storytelling. With 13 original buildings and a collection of powerful memorials, Whitney provides a deeply human account of American slavery, rooted in the stories of those who lived through it.
This grant will help maintain critical staff and operations at a time when cultural institutions continue to face economic uncertainty. As a nonprofit organization with no permanent endowment, Whitney relies on public support and private philanthropy to continue this important work.
Funding for the 2025 Louisiana Culture Care Fund Grant has been provided by the State of Louisiana and administered by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities.
“We are grateful to the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities for recognizing the value of our mission and the urgency of preserving and interpreting this history,” said Ashley Rogers, executive director of Whitney Plantation. “Support from the Louisiana Culture Care Fund helps ensure that Whitney remains open to the public and responsive to the needs of our community.”
